Choose Your Hard

A poem credited to Devon Brough posits that life is not easy and daily we are confronted with opposing difficulties but within them, we have choices, even if they're hard.

Having bad habits can be hard. They can lead to a lower quality of life than we imagined. Lack of vitality. Gaining unwanted weight. Taking medications. Not being able to do what we want to. Spending time and money on doctors. Being stuck in habits that don’t serve us and worrying about our health is hard.

Creating healthy habits can be hard, too. It doesn’t always come naturally. Changing how we think and what we do–even to reverse disease or reduce the risk of becoming ill can be hard. Learning how to cook–or cook differently. Overcoming cravings. Making time to learn new things. Trying new foods. Living with loved ones who don’t want to change. Hard.

Choosing to change or stay the same is like being stuck between a rock and a hard place. It can be very uncomfortable but we still have room to choose.

Healthy habits come easy for some. Others struggle. Making changes can be hard.

Even when we want to.

Even when we need to.

New habits take time to form…just like the old ones did. Doing it alone can be hard. It can mean feeling overwhelmed, confused, frustrated, and sometimes, defeated.

Asking for help can be hard, too. Making time in your schedule, investing in yourself, following through, and having an open mind…hard, hard, hard, and hard.

The good news is that even though change is hard, it does get easier. Forming habits is like building muscle...they both take time and intention. A health coaching client told me recently that things got easier much faster than she thought. Isn’t that encouraging?

So…

If you don’t feel as good as you want to

If unwanted weight has you feeling sluggish or unwell

If you find yourself saying “no” because you don’t have the energy

If your doctor told you to consider taking meds to lower your cholesterol…

If you believe you can do better, choose the hard that gets you unstuck. Choose the hard that will improve the way you feel and quite possibly, how long you live.
