Think Pink: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, created to raise awareness for breast cancer prevention and treatment. Fifty years ago the United States declared a “war on cancer” but statistics are trending in the wrong direction with 1 in 8 women projected to develop breast cancer in their lifetime. According to the National Cancer Institute, only about 10% of cancer cases are linked to genetics; the remaining 90% or more stem from environmental and lifestyle factors and are potentially preventable. Research has shown that more than one-third of all cancer deaths in the United States are due to poor diet, yet most are unaware of the connection.

But there is reason for hope! The good news is that it’s not just the toss of the dice or genetics that determines the risk of developing breast cancer. It’s time to learn how to take back control. A healthy diet goes a long way in the prevention of and recovery from breast cancer. Research has shown that more than one-third of all cancer deaths in the United States are due to poor diet, yet most people are unaware of the connection.

In this Food for Life class, you’ll learn how certain foods and nutrients work to promote or discourage the growth of cancer and learn delicious recipes you can taste and make at home later.

Eat Green: Plant-based food is associated with a lower risk of developing and dying from breast cancer. Eating a low-fat diet rich in fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans—while avoiding meat, dairy, and fatty animal products promotes breast health.
