About the event

This Diabetes Initiative series provides the knowledge, tools, and lifestyle strategies to help individuals reduce the risk of developing diabetes and to manage and even reverse the disease. Classes are intended for those with diabetes, prediabetes, or a family history or risk factors for developing diabetes, and their adult family members and loved ones.

The Power of Your Plate and Grocery Cart

Thursday, May 16, 2024, 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.

Let’s get practical! This class provides the knowledge and resources for trying out a new way of eating. Using the tools provided, participants often experience better blood sugar levels, weight loss if needed, and other health benefits within a surprisingly short time.

The Power Plate diagram illustrates the essential food groups: vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and fruits. From these groups, you will be assisted to create your own Weekly Meal Planner and learn how to navigate the grocery store to find the treasures (and avoid the troublemakers!). We’ll discuss common concerns, including how to prevent and treat low blood sugar for those taking certain medications and how to ease your transition into a filling, high-fiber way of eating. This class will not have a cooking component, but will instead be an opportunity to learn, discuss, and work through practical applications of how to stick to a new way of eating.
